Chevy Silverado 2500 Powertrain and Towing Capacity
When you drive the Chevy Silverado 2500, it'll be equipped with one of two powerful engine options, each of which provides a different towing capacity.
The standard engine is the Vortec® 6.0L V8. This engine delivers 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. It also has a maximum towing capacity of 14,800 pounds when properly equipped.
Your other option is the available Duramax® 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine that generates 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. This engine can pull up to 18,100 pounds when properly equipped.
Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, however, the Duramax® engine sports an Allison® 1000-series transmission. This has been specially designed by military tank engineers to handle the 910 lb-ft of torque this engine generates.
Silverado 2500 Configurations
An often-overlooked piece to the towing capacity puzzle is your configuration. The Silverado 2500 makes three different cabins and two different boxes available, and every pairing results in a different 2500HD towing capacity.
Regular Cab
The regular cab is the smallest cabin, with just a single row of seats that accommodates up to three passengers. This cab is only paired with the long box, which has a total cargo capacity of 76.3 cubic feet. This configuration gets you your highest towing capacity, maxing out at 18,100 pounds.
4-Door Double Cab
The 4-door double cab seats up-to six passengers between both rows, with 34.6 inches of rear legroom. It can be equipped with both the long box, and the standard box, which accommodates 61 cubic feet of cargo. With the long box, you'll have a maximum towing capacity of 15,700 pounds. With the standard box, you can tow up to 16,400 pounds.
Crew Cab
The crew cab can also seat a total of six passengers but extends the length of the cabin to provide 40.9 inches of rear legroom. When paired with the long box, this cab can tow up-to 14,800 pounds. With the standard box, it can tow up-to 15,400 pounds.
Chevy Silverado 2500 Towing Tools
To help keep its capabilities high, the Chevy Silverado 2500 offers several towing tools that get the job done. For example, you can add the trailering package with trailer brake controller. This allows you to link your trailer brakes with your truck's so that you can stop both at the same time.
The 6-speed automatic transmissions also include Tow/Haul mode and engine braking to help prevent “searching” for gears when hauling heavy loads. The engine braking feature helps you stop without using your brakes, especially when travelling downhill. Utilizing this feature where possible may preserve your truck's brakes and increase time between brake pad replacements.
