Meet Clay Wessell
Clay Wessell is the kind of person you'd expect to find at a great dealership like Winner Chevrolet of Wilmington. He has lived in Delaware all his life, and loves sports, music, and spending time with his family. Like a lot of people in WILMINGTON, he's a Chevy enthusiast and owns a Silverado and a Tahoe. But it took him a long time to get into the auto industry. His late father-in-law told him in 1987 that with his "gift for the gab," he was a natural. But he didn't listen to him until 2003. Now he's one of the managers at Diver.

What do you like most about working at Diver?The owner, Rich Diver, isn't afraid to spend money to make Diver a better place, for customers AND for employees. There is teamwork and friendly competition between the departments, and we all want to make this the best dealership possible.
How do most people buy cars in Wilmington?Most people do research online, look for sales in the News Journal or other papers, and we also get the occasional walk-in. Customers think they know what car they want, but our job is to help them find the car they really need.
What are the rewards of your job?The whole process of getting a customer from when I first see them to introducing him or her to my business manager to finalize the sale. When they drive away with a smile on their face, that's the best part for me.
What trends have you seen lately?Like in every other field, car sales is moving online as more and more people are buying cars with the help of the Internet.
What's the most memorable sale that you've made at Diver?It's really a 2-beer story: Mr. Miller had been to another dealer and they told him one thing on the sales floor and then the price went up a hundred dollars when he went to sign the papers. So obviously credibility was very important to him. We worked out payments on a new car, but it was out of his budget. Then we found the PERFECT certified, pre-owned car for him in our inventory, and we turned him into a Diver Driver for life!
He has since referred his friends and family to us, and we've always taken good care of them too. That's just how we do things at Diver. The customer always comes first.
What is it about your sales team that makes it one of the best car dealerships in Wilmington?We've just got a super-qualified and passionate sales staff that really cares about helping people find the right car or truck for them. I don't think other dealers around here can compare with Diver.
