Learn About New and Used Car Sales in Delaware from Used Car Manager, Doug Diver

Doug Diver

Doug Diver isn't the kind of person you'd initially expect to find in car sales.

With a BS in HR from the University of Delaware, you might expect to see him working for a large corporation. But his family has always been in the auto industry, so for him, it was a natural choice. On a typical day off, you might see Doug on the tennis court, on the golf course, fishing, or on a power walk around town. But at work, he's the Used Car Manager at Winner Chevrolet of Wilmington.

What do you like most about working at Diver?

I enjoy the various challenges that this position (and others I've had with Diver) brings me on a daily basis. I like working directly with many different people, and I very much like mentoring and seeing my people succeed.

How do most people buy cars in Wilmington?

Most customers around here start (and often end) their auto purchases online. I feel Diver has always done a good job online, and we will need to continue to lead digitally in order to stay ahead of our peers. On the used car side of the business, customers know what they want about 60% of the time, if I had to guess. Good salesmanship is very important and is often the determining factor when shoppers are deciding whom to buy a car from. We always want to be friendly and competent so we can guide our customers through the process. This benefits our customers and the dealership.

What are the rewards of your job?

There are many rewards beyond the strictly financial ones. I really like seeing people that I have guided, coached, hired, or sometimes brought into the business succeed, both on a professional AND personal level

What trends have you seen lately?

People want easy transactions. They want their experiences to be fluid, to the point, and painless. They don't want to hop around to different dealers for a month before buying a car. They want to be well treated the first time by intelligent, well-informed personnel, and they want to feel good about their purchase.

What's the most memorable sale that you've made at Diver?

In 1999, I sold two very old Trackers in one week. One had a manual transmission, and I took the kid out for two hours and taught him how to drive a stick shift.

What is it about your sales team that makes it one of the best car dealerships in Wilmington?

I feel the Diver team understands our processes, pricing and the market in general, so we know what we need to do every day to succeed. We are very customer-focused, and I'm not just saying that because I'm in the family.
